We’re excited to share this news with you!
After the runaway success of The Little Mermaid Jr and Legally Blonde: The Musical in 2014, we’ve been looking high and low for two musicals that we believe would be excellent follow-ups and give audiences Initial Stages’ 16th and 17th major musical productions since its inception in 2004.
We’re excited to announce that we’ve found the shows that fit the bill perfectly…so without any further ado, please read on to see what we are going to be offering you this year!
Disney’s My Son Pinocchio Jr.
Our 2015 Junior Show features some of the most beautiful songs ever written for a musical.
In My Son Pinocchio Jr, the classic tale of toymaker Geppetto’s little wooden puppet is given new life. This new musical, which retells the classic Disney story from Geppetto’s perspective, features the beloved classic songs ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ and ‘I’ve Got No Strings’, alongside a host of new songs by Oscar and Grammy Award-winner and master melodist Stephen Schwartz, tackling timely issues about what it means to be “the perfect child” – and what it means to be “a real father.”
Join the Blue Fairy, Stromboli and a lively cast of characters as Geppetto journeys beyond the toy shop to discover the meaning of family. My Son Pinocchio Jr is a magical mix of heartwarming fairy tale and action-packed adventure. Audiences will love following Pinocchio’s journey from an awkward wooden puppet to a real live boy and will be charmed by Geppetto’s transformation from demanding creator to real live father.
My Son Pinocchio Jr will be staged at WestSide Performing Arts Centre on Saturday 27 June at 2pm & 7.30pm.
Tickets for My Son Pinocchio Jr will go on sale Monday 18 May from Riverlinks Box Office.
The year, our talented Seniors will be staging a jewel in Broadway’s crown of theatrical delights; the toe-tapping, tap-dancing spectacular, 42nd Street.
42nd Street tells the story of a humble, naïve young actress named Peggy Sawyer who has come to audition for a new Broadway musical, Pretty Lady. Unfortunately, due to her nervousness, Peggy arrives to the audition late and misses her chance to join the chorus.
Luckily, Peggy soon catches the eye of the famous director, Julian Marsh, and he gives Peggy her big break. However, the show’s aging leading lady, Dorothy Brock, quickly grows to dislike Peggy.
On opening night, Ms. Brock falls and breaks her ankle. Panic spreads through the company, as the show is doomed for closure, until it is suggested that Peggy take the role. In only thirty-six hours, Peggy learns twenty-five pages, six songs and ten dance numbers and becomes a star.
The lyrics sung by Marsh to Sawyer, from the song ‘Lullaby of Broadway’, have become among the best recognised musical lyrics in Broadway history and the show also features other unforgettable hits, such as ‘We’re In The Money’, ‘Shuffle Off to Buffalo’, and of course the title song. This is THE Broadway musical of musicals and we’re sure that 42nd Street will be a hit with audiences of every age!
42nd Street will be staged at WestSide Performing Arts Centre, Mooroopna on Friday 16 October at 7.30pm & Saturday 17 October at 2pm & 7.30pm.
Tickets for 42nd Street will go on sale Monday 31 August from Riverlinks Box Office.
